Have you ever experienced such symptoms as shortness of breath, chest tightness, or wheezing? Or even worse, do you suffer from similar symptoms on a regular basis? If so, chances are good that you have asthma. This chronic condition affects your respiratory system, causing severe symptoms that impact your life quality. And the chances of that are actually quite high: asthmatic symptoms are one of the main reasons behind school and work absenteeism.

Asthma

Asthma represents a chronic disorder affecting bronchial tubes in your lungs. In the case of asthma, bronchial tubes are inflamed and swollen, causing breathing difficulties, including wheezing or coughing. These problems may repeat several times a day and get even worse at night time. The triggers may comprise both certain substances or situations. Allergic asthma is developed when the body comes into contact with an allergen (substances in the air or medications, for example). Non-allergic asthma, in turn, can be a result of physical efforts or stress, among others. Certain jobs, moreover, are associated with the risk of developing asthma symptoms, where dust, fumes, and other irritants are involved. Unfortunately, the phenomenon of childhood asthma, occurring in children below five years of age, is also quite common. What is more, individuals with cases of allergies and asthma in the family, are at a higher risk of experiencing asthmatic symptoms. It is estimated that the prevalence of asthma can be in approximately 50% of the cases attributed to genetic predispositions, while the other half is associated with environmental factors. Currently, the condition cannot be effectively treated. Nonetheless, appropriate and rapid diagnosis and, as a consequence, an individually defined treatment, allows for a successful management of the disease. If possible, an allergist or immunologist should be involved in diagnosing the disease and facilitating the therapy.

In the first place, the disease triggers should be eliminated from the immediate surroundings to relieve the disease symptoms. When this is not adequate, taking anti-asthmatic drugs has to be followed. Severe cases of asthma with daily attacks are treated using inhaled corticosteroids. In addition, over the counter treatment possibilities are available to relieve temporary asthmatic symptoms. Taking into accent the relatively considerable costs involved in the treatment of the disease, over the counter preparations may constitute an appealing option for asthmatic patients. Over the counter asthma inhalers including, among others, Asthmanefrin (racepinephrine), are intended for providing temporary help, but do not solve the problem in the long run. Asthmanefrin helps lessen the disease symptoms by contributing to the relaxation of inflamed muscles, which, in turn, dilates the respiratory tracts. There are some important aspects to consider before deciding whether an over the counter asthma inhaler is the right choice for you. First and foremost, prior to purchasing and using the inhaler, you have to ask yourself whether you are absolutely confident that the symptoms experienced are indeed the signs of asthma. Do you have a medical diagnosis confirmed by a qualified doctor? Where this is not the case, using such an inhaler may only contribute to covering symptoms of other major disorders, including heart disease or chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder, among others. What is more, similarly to other drugs, using an over the counter asthma inhaler may lead to such side effects as headaches, dizziness, nausea, sinus pain, and sleeping difficulties. Asthmanefrin should also be avoided by patients suffering from heart disease, diabetes, thyroid disorders, or bladder issues.

Asthma represents a serious medical condition that requires seeking appropriate treatment. The sooner it happens, the better. Depending on its severity, anti-asthmatic therapy will most likely include corticosteroids or over the counter bronchodilators. The latter are considered safe provided that the symptoms experienced are confirmed to be attributable to asthma. Although the disease cannot be cured, the use of the therapies mentioned can successfully make it manageable. With the support of your doctor, it is possible to control the disease and participate fully in all aspects of everyday life.
