Over the counter nausea medicine

Nausea itself is not a disease, but it represents an important symptom of other conditions. It can be defined as an unpleasant feeling of a pressure on the stomach that frequently signals vomiting. Common causes of nausea, also in children, include, among others, excessive food consumption, food poisoning, various infections, emotional distress, or motion sickness. Nausea also occurs very often within early stages of pregnancy. Nausea can be experienced as well in the case of more serious conditions, including serious alcohol intoxication, ulcerous disease, or brain injuries. Medicines used for treating nausea are referred to as antiemetics. Anti nausea over the counter medicines are commonly chosen by patients as they bring a rapid relief of this unwanted manifestation of a sickness.

Over the counter medicine for nausea

Anti nausea medication over the counter represents a drug that can be purchased without a prescription and seeing your doctor, which is particularly significant in the case of nausea due to experienced unpleasantness. Over the counter anti nausea medicines are typically used for a maximum of a few days as the condition usually goes away relatively quickly after taking appropriate medications that most people can use. There are various over the counter remedies available on the market to treat ailments related to nausea. What is important, they differ also in terms of their modes of action. Over the counter nausea medicines comprise but are not limited to antihistamines, antacids, or phosphorated carbohydrates. For example, bismuth subsalicylate (known also as Kaopectate) facilitates the treatment of nausea associated with gastric infections (the so-called “stomach flu”) and diarrhoea. Antihistamines are generally effective when relieving nausea related to motion sickness (for example Dramamine). It is important to bear in mind that over the counter anti nausea medications should be taken only to cure mild and sporadic episodes of nausea. Those suffering from severe nausea should always consult their primary care physician. There are several factors that need to be taken into consideration when choosing over the counter nausea medications, including medical conditions of the patient together with age, and in women – pregnancy. In order to help you choose and purchase proper nausea remedies over the counter, characterized below are some most commonly used medications.

Generic Buscopan Butylscopolamine

Butylscopolamine is an anticholinergic drug with scopolamine butylbromide as the active ingredient. The medicine reduces the secretion of fluids and slows down the increased bowel movements. It is commonly used to treat nausea connected with motion sickness as well as for anaesthesia. The medication should be used after medical consultation in the case of kidney and liver disease, some heart conditions, and bladder issues. Moreover, it is not recommended to take the medication during pregnancy and breast-feeding as its effects on unborn babies and infants remain unknown. The drug, furthermore, should not be used to treat the symptoms of nausea in children as they are more vulnerable to experiencing its adverse effects. Butylscopolamine should be taken ideally with a glass of water. In the event of missed dose, the drug should be taken as soon as possible, however, double dose is not recommended in the case of a significant delay. The drug may cause an intensification of symptoms such as drowsiness when used with other medications affecting the nervous system, including antidepressants, sedatives, or antihistamines. In addition, some mild side effects may occur more frequently. These include dizziness, blurred vision, dry eyes and mouth, and heart palpitations. Because of these conditions, you should not engage in activities that require particular concentration, such as driving. The use of Butylscopolamine should be immediately terminated and medical help sought when experiencing breathing and sight problems, face swelling, or urinary disorders.

Generic Dramamine Dimenhydrinate

The drug is effective when treating nausea experienced due to motion sickness. It is sold in the form of liquid that contains Dimenhydrinate as the active substance. Similarly to Butylscopolamine, having kidney and liver issues, as well as heart disease is a prerequisite for discontinuing the use of the medication. Additionally, some respiratory diseases, including asthma, represent a contraindication for the drug use. Unlike Butylscopolamine, Dimenhydrinate does not cause harm for unborn children. However, the drug does penetrate into breast milk and may damage infant health. What is more, the medication should not be used in children below 2 years of age. According to recommendations, the drug dose should be measured using a dedicated cup. The medication should be taken at 4-6-hour time intervals and not more than 400 mg of the drug should be taken within 24 hours. In the case of missed dose, take it as soon as possible, however, do not double the dose when it is time for the next one. Drowsiness, dizziness, anxiety, blurred vision, or insomnia may be experienced when taking the drug. Dimenhydrinate should not be combined with other medications acting on the central nervous system as it is likely to increase the negative effects of the drugs. The same rule applies to alcohol and other stimulants. Seek medical help in case of the occurrence of the following symptoms: seizures or convulsions, breathing difficulties, and drowsiness as well as other indicators of an allergic reaction (swelling or hives, for example).

Generic Antivert Meclizine

Such as Dimenhydrinate, Meclizine is an antihistamine drug with an active substance that is used to relieve nausea resulting from motion sickness. In order to relieve the sickness experienced, the medication should be taken approximately 60 minutes before the planned travel. When taken on the road, Meclizine may be used every 24 hours. Similarly to Butylscopolamine and Dimenhydrinate, liver, kidney, bladder, and respiratory issues have to be discussed with a doctor prior to using the medication. Furthermore, the drug weakens reaction capabilities and, therefore, should be avoided when driving or operating specialised equipment at the work place, for example. Alcohol can further contribute to accelerating some of the side effects of the medication that include headache, tiredness, or drowsiness. Using the drug with medications of similar effects can increase these adverse events. Moreover, in the case of breathing problems or face swelling, medical assistance should be sought as soon as possible. Unlike in the case of other nausea medicine over the counter described here, Meclizine is generally taken when needed, and, therefore, no strict dosing schedule applies. Nevertheless, regularity of use should be respected when possible.

Generic Diclegis Pyridoxine and Doxylamine

Diclegis constitutes a mixture of pyridoxine hydrochloride (known as vitamin B6) and doxylamine succinate. The medication is used for the treatment of nausea during pregnancy. As estimated, the common so-called “morning sickness” affects even up to 90% of pregnant women. When using the drug for the first time, two tablets should be taken at bedtime on the first day. If such a dose successfully reduces the sickness on the following day, maintain taking two pills every day before going to bed. If nausea remains, you should finish taking the two tablet dose that evening and start the next day from taking an extra pill. The maximum safe daily dose of the drug accounts for four pills (one taken in the morning, one in the mid-afternoon and two in the evening). This combination is the only one authorized for use in pregnant women as Pyridoxine (a vitamin) is acknowledged as causing no adverse effects for the foetus. Doxylamine, in turn, cause some side effects, however, of a relatively mild strength, such as vertigo, headache, irritability, or insomnia. As already mentioned when describing the drugs above, taking Doxylamine with other drugs of similar effects should be avoided. While being safe during pregnancy, women, however, should not breastfeed their babies when taking Doxylamine as the drug may cause some harmful effects in the breastfed children.

Nausea as an illness symptom should not be ignored, however, the unpleasantness associated should be acted upon as it limits our daily functioning. At present, nausea can be effectively and rapidly cured. Over the counter nausea medications have an import role to play in this regard. A wide range and availability of nausea medications should be, however, accompanied by the knowledge of their indications and side effects, among others, to facilitate the healing process as well as protect the health of others as in the case of pregnant women.
