Amoxicillin Over the Counter

Amoxicillin is an antibiotic used in the treatment of several types of bacterial infections. Amoxicillin was discovered in the year 1958 and was made available for medical use in 1972. Due to its immense benefits, it has been added on the World Health Organization’s List of Essential Medicines which consists of the safest and most effective medicines commonly used in a healthcare system.

Amoxicillin was among several semi-synthetic derivatives of 6-aminopenicillic acid, also known as 6-APA, which is at the core of the penicillin group of antibiotics.

Amoxicillin acts much in the same way as the rest of the members of the penicillin family. It basically attaches itself to the cell wall of various bacteria and disrupts it, which results in their death. More specifically, it prevents the cross-linkage between compounds known as linear peptidoglycan polymer chains which are a part of both gram-positive to a major extent and gram-negative bacteria to a lesser extent, which is why it is not very effective against gram negative bacteria.

Amoxicillin is known to cure a wide range of conditions. It is majorly used to treat various bacterial infections like bronchitis, tonsillitis, gonorrhea, pneumonia and infections of the skin, throat, nose and ear. Many healthcare providers also prescribe amoxicillin for UTI treatment. Besides, it can be used to treat stomach ulcers caused by Heliobacter pylori when used in conjunction with drugs like clarithromycin (Biaxin), lansoprazole and omeprazole.

It is highly effective against bacteria like Bacillus subtilis, Streptococcus, Enterococcus, Haemophilus, Moraxella, Helicobacter, etc.

There are several side effects which can occur due to usage of amoxicillin, including rashes, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and antibiotic associated colitis. Uncommon side effects include lightheadedness, mental changes, insomnia, anxiety, confusion, sensitivity to light, sounds, unclear thinking, etc.

Allergies associated with amoxicillin can be very intense and require immediate medical assistance. It initially starts off with a change in the mental state, then rashes on the skin are observed with intense itching, usually on the fingertips and groin area. The rashes then spread rapidly and various uncomfortable sensations like nausea, vomiting and fever begin to manifest.

Milder symptoms like non-itching rashes may occur up to after one week after treatment stops. For those allergic to amoxicillin, anaphylaxis is the most dangerous condition as it may even cause death.

Generic Amoxil Amoxicillin

Generic versions are basically copies of branded drugs which comprise the exact same chemical composition, dosage, benefits, strength and efficacy. Simply put, the pharmacological effects, side effects and administration routes of generic drugs are exactly the same with those of their branded counterparts.

When large companies invest heavily in developing infrastructure, research, drug development and marketing, they are bound to recover their costs from somewhere. They do this by increasing the costs of meds which are technically much cheaper to produce than what they cost in the retail market.

Generic drug manufacturers, however, do not have to invest so heavily into research, development and marketing. So, after the patent of the original drug manufacturer expires, these manufacturers take permission from the FDA and other regulatory bodies to produce the exact same drug. Hence, the costs which need to be recovered are much lower, which allows them to sell at lower prices than the brand- name drug.

Therefore, the only difference between generic and brand name Amoxil is the price.

Some of the generic variants of amoxicillin over the counter available worldwide are Amoxybid, Amoxypen, Benimox, Blumox, Cidomex, Comoxyl, Delamin, Dynamox, Epiclox, Erox, Hipen, Hycimox, Moxybiotic etc.

Amoxicillin Dosage

The following is a list of the dosage, duration of therapy etc. for some of the conditions that amoxicillin is used to treat (in adult patients).

A dose of 250 – 500mg of amoxicillin can be administered orally, three times a day. This has to be taken between 3 to 7 days depending upon the doctor’s advice.

An alternative dosage is amoxicillin 500mg to 875mg, taken twice a day (if the condition is serious).

A bacterial infection of the sinus can be successfully treated with 250 to 500mg of amoxicillin taken 3 times a day for 10-14 days. However, if the results are not satisfactory or in the case of recurrent infection, the duration of treatment may be extended to 3-4 weeks.

Skin infection

200 to 500mg is to be administered orally, three times a day for a period of 7 to 10 days.

Urinary Tract Infection

When a patient is diagnosed with UTI caused by bacteria, the recommended treatment plan usually includes taking 250 to 500mg of amoxicillin 3 times a day for 3-7 days. An alternative plan that may also be considered includes taking 500 to 875mg of amoxicillin twice a day for the same number of days.

Amoxicillin Overdose

A common dose for amoxicillin for severe infections is about 875 mg taken every 12 hours or 500 mg taken every 8 hours. Although it is rare to overdose on Amoxicillin, it may still happen. In case of an overdose, any of the abovementioned side effects may be observed, except that they are a lot more severe. For example, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea may occur and it might become necessary in such cases, depending upon the dosage, to supply external fluids either orally or through an IV to replenish the amount of water and salts expelled in this way. For more extreme overdoses, flushing the stomach might be necessary.

Amoxicillin Drug Interactions

Amoxicillin may interact with several drugs and cause complications. It causes oral contraceptives to become less effective, reduces renal excretion when used in combination with probenecid causing increased levels of amoxicillin in the blood, increases the action of warfarin, etc. It may also cause adverse reactions when used with methotrexate, typhoid vaccine and allopurinol.

Amoxicillin is a highly effective drug which has several generic variants available throughout the world. It is used to treat several diseases in varying dosages and durations. Overdosing on Amoxicillin or using it in conjunction with certain drugs may lead to undesirable complications. Hence, it is always recommended to consult a doctor before taking Amoxicillin for any reason whatsoever.
