Flonase Over the Counter

Allergies are conditions which result from hypersensitivity of the immune system to seemingly harmless things in the environment like pollen, dust or even normal food items.

Allergy-related conditions include atopic dermatitis, food allergies, hay fever, anaphylaxis, allergic asthma and other. Symptoms vary from red eyes, rashes on the skin which may or may not itch to swelling of various body parts and shortness of breath.

Allergy may be caused by different substances that are usually referred to as allergens. Common allergens include pollen, specific food items, metals, insect stings and medication. Allergens are different for different people and the intensity of the allergy also differs for everyone. Allergies may develop both due to genetic and environmental factors.

It is essentially caused by the body’s immune system wrongly identifying the allergen as a serious threat and launching a response mechanism against it.

Treating an allergy requires a diagnosis from a qualified healthcare provider, usually based on testing the skin or blood of the patient. Treatment methods include avoiding exposure to the allergen in question and using medications such as antihistamines and steroids, which aid in suppressing the allergic reaction.

In extreme cases of allergy, adrenaline may be injected to reduce the intensity of the reaction. Allergen immunotherapy is a treatment which gradually exposes patients to increasing levels of allergen to improve their resistance and is effective in conditions such as hay fever and insect bites.

Flonase OTC

Flonase belongs to a class of drugs called corticosteroids which are hormones that majorly alter the metabolism of carbohydrates. They also affect the metabolism of fats and proteins to a lesser extent. It is used to treat allergic rhinitis, asthma, nasal polyps, and various skin disorders.

It is used in powder form or as an aerosol inhalant for prophylaxis of asthma and allergic rhinitis whereas nasal drops are used for treatment of nasal polyps. Topical creams and ointments are used for treating various skin disorders, while the oral form of the medication is used to treat ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease.

It essentially works by eliciting a vasodilatory and anti- inflammatory response. It achieves this by targeting the glucocorticoid receptor which is responsible for inflammatory responses.

What Forms Is Flonase Available in?

There are currently two variants of Flonase or Fluticasone nasal spray available in the market. One is the regular Flonase which has been available in stores for the past several years and the other one is Flonase Sensimist which was launched in February 2017. Flonase Sensimist is an over-the-counter version of the soon to be discontinued Veramyst.

The difference between these products is that the active ingredient of Flonase is Fluticasone Propionate and that of Flonase Sensimist is Fluticasone Furoate. However, apart from the name the two compounds are significantly different in terms of their structure and effect.

Flonase Sensimist is gentler on the nasal passage, and its patented spray mechanism delivers the medication much more gently than other products. Sensimist is also approved for children aged 2 years and older, while normal Flonase is only for children above 4 years of age.

Overall, Flonase Sensimist (Fluticasone Furoate) is best for kids between 2 and 4 years of age, and maybe even older depending on the symptoms, while adults are usually advised to use regular Flonase (Fluticasone Propionate).

Why Is Flonase Available Over the Counter?

It is a completely safe drug which has no major side effects and overdoses are extremely rare. Lasting damage only occurs to children below 4 years of age, and that is only after long term exposure. Hence, there is no reason why Flonase should not be available over the counter.

Nevertheless, it’s important to remember about the side effects, drug interactions and contraindications of Flonase in order to ensure proper treatment. If the dosage is higher than the recommended levels, there is a rare possibility of some serious side effects. They include increased risk of systemic infections, elevated pressure in eyes, weakened immune system and osteoporosis. The nasal spray may cause vision problems, swelling of face, and difficulty in breathing, while the oral inhaler can cause upper respiratory tract infection, throat irritation and depression.

Fluticasone is also known to react with Ritonavir, a drug used in treatment of HIV and Ketoconazole, which is an anti-fungal drug.

Generic Flonase Fluticasone Nasal:

Generic Flonase is called Fluticasone Propionate and has similar characteristics to the brand name version. The US FDA requires all generic drugs to be exactly similar to their brand name counterparts in all relevant aspects of delivery including efficacy, time of action etc. Also, generic variants tend to be much cheaper than the brand name varieties since generic manufacturers don’t need to spend on marketing and research of the drug.

Fluticasone Nasal Spray

There are various variants of the generic type available for Fluticasone Furoate nasal sprays. They include Veramyst nasal spray which has recently been replaced with the Flonase Sensimist in markets. Both of these variants are safe for children above 2 years of age with a dosage limit of 1 spray per nostril per day.

Fluticasone Propionate similarly has generic variants, namely Flonase nasal spray, Fluticasone Nasal Propionate Generic and several other variants. These are only safe for children above 4 years of age.

Overall, some variants of Flonase can be used for children above 2 years of age whereas the original Flonase can be used on children above 4 years of age. Apart from this, for patients who also take Ritonavir and Ketoconazole, it is best to consult a doctor since they can have undesirable reactions.

It is also not advisable for pregnant women to use Flonase without consulting the doctor since it may have an impact on the development of the unborn child.
